Things to know: Sometimes STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) are called STIs- Sexually Transmitted Infections. This is because the "disease" shows up after the "infection" occurs and also, infections like "Crabs" (Pubic Lice) or fungal infections aren't really a disease but are still an infection or infestation that results from sexual contact. But to keep it simple, we'll use the more common term STD.
There are over 20 Sexually Transmitted Diseases but many of them are rare and some are also transmitted non-sexually. Some of the more commonly known ones are listed above. Some good sites for STD information are listed here.
Most STDs are the result of an infection from a fungus, a virus or from bacteria. It's important to realise that fungi, viruses and bacteria have no brains, no conscience. They don't care if you have never had sex before, or if you have had a lot of sexual contact. Just like a cold virus or food bacteria, they just do what they are built to do - infect you and survive to reproduce. Some STD infections can be a fairly minor problem, some can be a big deal and a few can shorten your life. So learn about them, learn how to protect yourself and your partner.
